Alessandro Giamberti
Dr. Alessandro Giamberti is Head of the Paediatric Cardiac Surgery and Adult Congenital Cardiac
Surgery Units at the IRCCS Policlinico San Donato in Milan and Adjunct Professor in Paediatric
Cardiac Surgery at the School of Specialisation in Cardiac Surgery at the University of Brescia.
After graduating in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, he moved to
the University of Bologna, where he specialised in Cardiac Surgery.
In 1990-1991, he won the FEDERSPEV Prize in Surgical Sciences and the Donatelli Prize in Cardiac
Surgery.
Before coming to Policlinico San Donato in 2000, he worked at the “Marie Lannelongue Hospital”
in Paris, the “Bambino Gesù Hospital” in Rome and the “Heart Hospital” in London.
Very active in the international arena, he collaborates as Consultant Paediatric Cardiac Surgeon
with the “Central Oil Workers Hospital” in Azerbaijan, the “Children's Hospital” in Cairo, Egypt, the
“Djidjine Cardiovascular Institute” in Belgrade, Serbia, and with the “St. Elisabeth General Catholic
Hospital” in Cameroon, where he was also Chairman of the Board of Directors.
Dr. Alessandro Giamberti's activities range from the treatment of adult congenital heart disease,
such as Fontan's operation, surgical pulmonary valve implantation in Tetralogy of Fallot and
Surgery of Cardiac Arrhythmias, to the treatment of more complex neonatal conditions such as
arterial switch and Norwood surgery for hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Since 2017, he has
developed a minimally invasive surgery programme for congenital heart disease.
He is the author of more than 130 international scientific papers, 3 monographs, 3 book chapters.
He is a member of the Italian Society of Cardiac Surgery (SICCH), the Italian Society of Paediatric
Cardiology (SICP), the European Association of Cardio-Thoracic Surgeons (EACTS), the World
Society for Paediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery (WSPCHS), the American Association of
Thoracic Surgery (AATS) and is Nucleus Member of the Working Group on Adult Congenital Heart
Disease of the European Society of Cardiology.
He is Scientific Director of the Italian Adult Congenital Heart Association (AICCA).
